After two and a half years of living in a furnished rental apartment since our actual apartment !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , while we !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! out of town and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , and waited for the old place to get fixed s o we could sell it (still not done: the fight with the insurers continues)...
...last weekend we finally moved into our “permanent” home. The photo above (plus a bit more junk in the back of the Pajero) is the total of our accessible possessions for the last couple of years: the rest’s been in storage.
Unfortunately the house we’re finally moving into isn’t quite complete - we had to give the landlord 3 months notice and a couple of renovation delays (thanks, Covid) meant we misjudged the timing of that. So we only have power in two rooms, heating is a fan heater, the bathroom and toilet are outside, and the kitchen’s a microwave. But at least we’re no longer paying rent, and with a bit of luck I’m only a few weeks from moving a house load of crap out of the shed and turning it into the man cave it was built to be. At which point, project car!

Yup. As long as we don’t get too badly screwed by the insurers on the old place, and I still have a job in 6 months (both of which are very much open questions), we may be back to a “ normal” l ife sometime soon. Which I’m hanging out for - I’m seriously over the transient lifestyle .
Fortunately the housing market in NZ is going crazy due to interest rates dropping through the floor, so while having two mortgages is no fun from a cashflow perspective, at least they’re cheap mortgages and we’ll recover the exp ense when we can finally sell the apartment.

Things are looking up! Living out of basically two rooms will be difficult but it'll be worth it!

Good luck with it all!

It’s not too bad; we’ve been doing it weekends all the way through the renovation, and at least now we have power and the we ather’s s ta rting to warm up. Having to go outside to use the bathroom at 4am in midwinter was no fu n at all.

Reminds me of when my home was being renovated and my whole family lived out of a few rooms. Pretty close quarters but it was memorable. Well, considering I was very young and still remember it it must have been.
